In the lecture, one of the issues surrounding the sound media, is that with the rise of technology, we lose the connection and reference of sound media to a particular place, culture and people. It has gradually become a ‘generic modern consumer product’ that is lacking of characteristics and personality of a particular place, culture and society where this sound is produced. • Having this issue in mind, research on a musician or a music band/group, of any country and culture, that the music displays unique personal style in terms of aesthetics or the content that it expresses; where you can refer it to the culture (such as musical influences from traditional music) and the society (such as social/political/cultural issues) where this music is produced. • Research on the background of the music and his/her culture and society, find the influence and connection between the culture and his/her artistic product (music, in this case). • Include links to his/her music or video

Can you think of some examples of media imperialism (local, your own country, overseas)? Definition of media imperialism "Media imperialism is a theory based upon an over-concentration of mass media from larger nations as a significant variable in negatively affecting smaller nations, in which the national identity of smaller nations is lessened or lost due to media homogeneity inherent in mass media from the larger countries." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_imperialism One of the examples I can think of is media imperialism occurs with our Malaysia’s newspaper. Our newspaper are strictly controlled by the government, hence all the news are all being manipulated and not all of them are true. My parents used to see newspaper before one of the 1MDB cases was discovered, but after 1MDB was discovered, most of the newspapers were more strictly controlled by the government by not simply slip out the news. (*In my opinion) We can see that t

“Films can teach, they can explain and they can move people to great depths. Having done all these things, is it possible for films to move people to action? There is no question for most social scientists that carefully constructed communications, films for instance, can produce changes in attitudes, in those who adequately receive the communication. The use of adequately is of course a conscious one in that we know that people tend to misperceive that which they hear and see, and go through fairly complicated strategies of selective attention and selective perception.” [Challenge for Change programme, National Film Board of Canada (NFB)] Question: Based on the statement above, share your thoughts on the issue, of how community video can make changes in people, and the community that they belonged to. You can give some examples to explain. I believe that media can make changes to people, and the community they belonged to. Media is very powerful, as it can destroy a

Discuss one or few of the scenes in ‘The Truman’s Show’ that captivates you, explain the role of media in that particular scene and what your opinion regarding the issues being portrayed in the movie. How is the movie affect you personally? Discuss a scene you find the most profound in the movie. One of the scene in ‘ The Truman Show’ that captivates me is the last scene before he went out from the dorm. Truman always hoped to go to Fiji Island and even though the show director Christof tried to stop him with the horrible storm and rain during his sailing to Fiji, he never once gave up. He even tried to overcome the fear of sea and of his childhood memories. Eventually, he came to the end of the dorm, he thought that that was the end as he tried to push past the big dorm. After that he saw a door where exit was and decided to get out, that was the most touching part as he decided that he did not want to be controlled by anyone again, he wanted be a free man. The role

Can you think of an example of a stereotypical image in media that has caused harm? What about an example where no harm has been caused? What’s the difference between these two examples? In my opinion, I think these images are one of the examples of stereotypical images in the media that has caused harm. The images shows the some of the actors and actresses and also the singer group Girl’s Day. As now Korean k-pop are globalise and become a hit especially throughout the Asian. Korean hit had gave the greatest impact on the style and appearance. Now in this new era, anywhere you go, you will find people who wants to have a future partner based on good looking appearance as the Korean celebrities. I think it cause harm to the society, for example plastic surgery. Based on the first picture, the singer group Girl’s Day have good looking appearance, stylish, and the most important look is their perfect body and long skinny legs. It actually give the concept to peop
