Definition of socialization:

“Socialization is a process whereby individuals are made aware of behaviours that are expected of them with regards to the norms, beliefs, attitudes and values of the society in which they live. Socialization in this sense, initiates the awareness of every individual, age and sex no in question, to the expected i.e. the existing trends in the society they live in, this means each society has a trend, lifestyle, way of life, dressing, language and so many other things that make up the social life of individuals. Socialization through the appreciation of cultural practices builds up the individual in facing the realities of life in that society.”

      Mass media, internet, technology, sophisticated gadgets etc have given huge impact in our life and towards the society. Without these things in our life, we cannot imagine how life will go on, will it be simple? Convenient? Mass media has affect socialization especially in children and young adults. As mass media give the impact regards to the norms, beliefs, attitudes and values of the society in which they live.

    Media such as television gives the greatest socialization impact on children. As children learn everything through what they see and hear but they still don’t know how to judge the wrong and right. It will give influence to their behaviour, culture, trend, lifestyle, language and so on to build up one individual. Once it was pick up during the childhood, their culture is hard to be changed. While watching television, children think that they are interacting, but they are actually not. Television programme such as cartoons will be children’s target. Most of the cartoon actually contains the scene of violation or threatening as to catch the children’s eye. Most of the children found that kind of scene is interesting and they tend to mimic their behaviour.

    As how does mass media affect the socialization on young adults? Media such as social media: facebook, twitter, instagram, whatsapp etc give the most influence on young adults. Young adults now much depend on social media and it had already become a trend and culture in the society. Young adults found that social media give very big help in terms of social life, convenient to communicate, easy to make friends and express themselves, discover new interesting things, easily sharing information, online shopping. Without the social media, young adults now cannot bond in with the society, because most of the young adults depend on social media to interact with one another instead of face to face interaction.

    The positive factors of mass media to children and young adults can be a lot. It helps to discover new interesting things or information that they don’t know before. It gives extra knowledge to especially children with the education website, hence it helps in education purpose. As for young adults, they mostly need tutorials or extra information in help of their homework, assignment, research or working life. Furthermore, it gives positive factors such as easy communication. For example: students can have a group chat with the teachers so that when they met problems in homework they can immediately ask for help. Another example: If we have organized an event, we can share it out immediately through mass media, and they don’t even have to print out the leaflets.

On the contrary, there are also negative effects of mass media. When communication becomes too easy, young adults and children don’t have face to face interaction anymore, or real life interaction becomes harder than they expect. In addition, young adults and children are easily been controlled or influenced by mass media. They may lose their self-discipline if they are addicted to media or they are easily been deceived by what they see or believe. They may rely on the ideal world of mass media rather than facing the reality world. Mass media can sometimes hurt a people, when the users are not matured enough or they are very straightforward without consideration of people’s feeling, their words and behaviour tend to cause trouble and hurt to people, it becomes cyberbullying or harassing.
